ON THE WAY UP? ON THE WAY OUT? |
" The Wall Street Journal (6/29/1999) Stemming the tide of law firm associate [and partner] dropouts has become a law practice issue of national significance. E.g., ABA Journal May/June 1999 "If I could find something to do, with even 3/4 this income ...." [Variant of most often recorded response to "Would you continue to practice law, if you thought you had a real choice?" in a 1997-1999 independent study.]
"Rude awakenings" and dispelled illusions are giving rise to increasingly widespread disenchantment with the realities of the traditional practice of law. A fundamental lack of awareness of the panoply of contexts and scopes of traditional and non-traditional law practice ambits, augmented by minimal - if any - awareness of the potential breadth and benefit of other applications of law degrees in the marketplace, compounds the potential for law and law-related career misadventures. Lack of "effective / efficient lawyering - healthy living," holistic and personally balanced practice management and development training and mentoring sets most lawyers on a course toward an inevitable crossroad, requiring them to choose between two negative options: "burn out or sell out."
